George Steel joins NYC Opera

Manager was previously Miller Theater exec

George Steel will take over as general manager and artistic director of New York City Opera Feb. 1.

Steel, who previously was exec director at the Miller Theater at Columbia University for 11 years, steps in following the sudden departure of Gerard Mortier in November, less then two years after he was chosen to take over the company.

No programming for the 2009-2010 season has yet been announced.
